The City of Yorkton will undertake to conduct additional flow monitoring of the city's sanitary sewer system at key points in the network on the west side, following a unanimous decision by Yorkton Council Monday.
This work derives from that which was done on the east side of the city to determine the best means to provide sanitary sewer to development lands. Engineering Services contacted ATAP Infrastructure Management Ltd. to determine a price for the service. ATAP identified an upset price of $30,000.00 (exclusive of GST) to complete this work. ATAP identified 16 to 20 locations on the west side of the city that warrant monitoring, given their importance to the collection system, i.e., serve as trunk mains for a large area, explained Gord Shaw Director of Planning & Engineering with the City.
"It is important to collect this information during a period of dry weather flows, i.e., winter, so that there can be a comparison to wet weather flows in spring/summer," he said.
The work will be to create data for a longer term strategy for the City.
"Engineering Services believes that this work is extremely important in understanding the limitations the existing sanitary network has before additional development or redevelopment occurs on the west side of the city. It is also important that information is collected during dry weather flows in order to compare with wet weather flows. This information is also important to collect in order to allow Engineering Services to populate a sanitary flow model it is building in-house. Finally, this information is important to collect to identify flows when a sanitary master plan is prepared for the city," said Shaw.
Shaw said the funding will not impact the recent City budget.
"The funding for the east side of the city came from the Land Development Fund. The Director requests that an additional $30,000 be withdrawn from the Land Development Fund for this proposed work," he said.
