The City of Yorkton has come on side in support for a transitional home for youth in the city.
Tom Seeley and Ron Skinner, representing the City's own Housing Committee appeared before the regular meeting of Council to discuss the City's support for the project.
In material circulated to Council from the Committee it noted Yorkton Transitional Homes for Youth (YTHY) has made significant process on the project.
"In the Spring YTHY conducted a needs assessment to identify the housing needs of youth in the community. The assessment identified that there are a number of youth who are either homeless or in tenuous housing situations in our city and surrounding communities. When compiling data from the City of Yorkton housing needs assessment and the Community Housing Plan that was put together by the Social Housing Committee not lonely were there youth who were homeless in the city but other members of vulnerable populations including immigrants and families," detailed the material.
In a Report from Gord Shaw, Director of Planning & Engineering with the City it noted the YTHY was seeking a letter of support from the city for this emergency shelter. Representatives previously met with Planning Services to determine available city-owned property.
"The purpose of this shelter is to accommodate on a temporary basis youth as well as other members of our community who are at risk of being homeless. This type of facility is not available to community members," said Shaw.
Shaw added, Planning Services and Economic Development are of the opinion a letter of support may be provided to the YTHY for this initiative.
Council was unanimous is approving a letter-of-support.
