Tourism Week in Yorkton was approved for June 5 to 11 at the regular meeting of City Council Monday.

Appearing before Council Neil Thom president of Tourism Yorkton said the sector is an important one to the city.

"Every dollar invested in tourism pays huge dividends to the economy of Yorkton through increased tourism activity. It's no wonder the Saskatchewan government places tourism as one of the leading industries in our province. With $1.6 billion spent annually in a sector that employs over 60,000 people in a province that boasts over 100,000 lakes, 140 regional, provincial and national parks and 4,3000 tourism events, tourism is good for business," he said.

The provincial influence extends to the city, said Thom.

"On a local level tourism in Yorkton stimulates the economy, provides entrepreneurial and employment opportunities and allows us to showcase our vibrant 'where good things happens' community. Tourism Yorkton understands the success of this sector is built upon the success of individual business and organizations that provide services, attractions and events. That's why this past year Tourism Yorkton participated in over $137,000 of co-ordinated marketing projects to further create economic benefits for our 94 tourism products and 26 events," he said.

Thom said his organization is dedicated to cooperating with others to continue to grow the sector.
"Tourism Yorkton continues to work with all the stake holders in the City. The planning process is currently underway for March 10 & 11, 2012, when Yorkton hosts a hunt, fish and outdoor show.

The resources available through Tourism Yorkton will help ensure this new event to our city is a success. Recovering from the wet year has provided many challenges for our industry and the community but with renovations and new builds we are emerging stronger and that bodes well for the future of tourism," he said.

As a highlight to celebrating the week a new map of the City, funded by the Painted Hand Casino is being launched, added Thom.
