The Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture is looking for volunteers who are interested in participating in weekly Crop Reports during the busy growing season. For about 30 weeks from spring to fall, a variety of questions are asked about relevant and local agricultural topics. Some of these topics include rainfall, weather conditions, seeding progress, haying progress, crop development and harvest progress.
Crop Reporters record information and either phone, fax or email it to the Agriculture Knowledge Centre. The data is then compiled and released to the public on Thursday mornings. This year, an exciting new feature for online survey submission will be introduced.
There are currently about 230 volunteers in the province; many of whom have been Crop Reporters for 10, 20, 30 or even 35 years. However, there are about 100 vacant RM positions that still need volunteers. Producers are encouraged to join the Crop Reporting Service whether your RM currently has a Crop Reporter or not; there are several RMs that have multiple reporters.
The Crop Report is Saskatchewan Agriculture's most popular publication and is an important tool used by many organizations and people in the agriculture industry. It also helps the general public to understand the challenges facing our producers.
