Animals
And The Relatives
7-out-of-10

This 2008 release by Nashville band And The Relatives is a fuzzy, up tempo, catchy indie rock sample of only a handful of songs. Animals is jam packed with spirited melodies and fun rhythms that may induce head bobbing and/or toe tapping.

My favorite thing about this record is the consistently great guitar parts weaving tight melodies around a walking bass line. Everything comes together so nicely, sounding perfect with the heavily fuzzed out effects. Sometimes edging on psychedelic rock, this style mixed with the raw vocals and the raucous drum lines makes for a perfect party record.

Mid record, the tempo is slightly brought down and the acoustics are picked up for "Marie", though the electrics do make another appearance. It's a nice way to give the ears a bit of a rest and introduce some variation.

I liked the variance these guys managed to fit into such a short record with a specific feeling. Each track feels like it can stand on its own as a single. With just enough pop flare, Animals is a great collection of some really cool indie rock songs by a band with a really interesting approach to music making.

Country/Static
Good Night, States
8-out-of-10

I've found one of those records that inspires me as a music maker but also causes some slight jealousy. Country/Static, by Good Night, States, is a quirky indie folk record that throws in a handsome helping of vintage synthesizers and steady rock beats.

The deep layers produced here by only four people is quite impressive, not to mention the perfect 4-part harmonies. There's so much substance to these songs, and the song writing can stand up on its own as well. The transforming synths and sensible drum beats are the meat and potatoes of this record. They create a very rich foundation for the vocals, which offers most of the melody, and the various other instruments that chime in here and there to add depth.

My favorite thing about this record is definitely the vocals, though. Switching between male and female lead, harmonies appearing sporadically, all tight and well placed. The voices are solid and well suited to the style.

The band also knows when to put the synths aside and sing something a little more roots-y. "My New Language" is beautiful, alt country song with a touch of gospel and some very well played organ. It's nice to hear the difference in song and the musicians flexing their muscles a bit.

Country/Static is a well played full length that is exciting and kept me guessing what was coming next. It was unexpected that there would be so many different styles, sounds and influences on this album. It's currently available at http://goodnightstates.bandcamp.com
