Yorkton Council has proclaimed National Volunteer Week in the city.
"National Volunteer Week (April 6-12, 2014) is a time to recognize, celebrate, and thank
our volunteers. Volunteers strengthen our communities and make our country vibrant. National Volunteer Week is Canada's largest celebration of volunteers, volunteerism, and civic participation," explained Lisa Washington, Community Development Manager with the City.
This year to help recognize volunteers locally a Mayor's Volunteer Recognition event will be held April 8.
Mayor Bob Maloney said people can receive a complimentary ticket and another for your volunteer, by going to the City of Yorkton website (city.yorkton.sk.ca/dept/leisure/volunteer.asp) and filling out a form detailing the impact a volunteer has had on one's life.
"It's an opportunity to pay tribute to those people, and to let them know they've made a difference," he said.
Washington said volunteers are an integral part of communities across the country, including Yorkton.
"Volunteering is part of our identity as Canadians - we value civic participation and embrace a spirit of community. The tremendous efforts of our 13.3 million volunteers help make Canada a vibrant, safe place to call home. Across the country, Canadians are getting involved and leading positive change in a variety of ways, all of them vital - from quick bursts of mobile volunteering on smartphones to front-line disaster relief overseas. The work of volunteers is essential to maintaining healthy, vibrant communities at home and around the world. National Volunteer Week is all about taking time to recognize the incredible contributions of Canada's volunteers and letting them know how much their efforts are appreciated," she said.
"Volunteers in Yorkton mentor our children, feed our hungry, comfort our lonely, and fundraise for our charitable organizations. Volunteers operate and support our recreation activities sport organizations, and cultural events. Volunteers advise, consult, and govern many small and large organizations in Yorkton. Yorkton's volunteers are young, old, families, workers, retirees, men and women of all ages and backgrounds. The collective result of the work done by our city's volunteers is that Yorkton is a more desirable place to live, work and play."
