Ladies from all walks of life gathered at the SIGN building on Broadway Street last Sunday to celebrate women’s contributions and learn self-care techniques.

They participated in the Everyday Heroes event, which honoured women’s hard work in their families and communities.

“We certainly appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedules to attend today’s first-of-its-kind event in our city,” City Councillor Randy Goulden told the capacity crowd. “We are here today to celebrate all women, as we are the everyday heroes in the lives of the many people around us.”

The day-long event offered women a chance to learn about the wide variety of health and living services available in Yorkton.

“We find that people don’t often realize all that Yorkton has to offer,” Goulden said. “[They’re] missing out on some great services...to maintain and, ideally, improve their health.”
A panel of speakers from a vast array of health and wellness professions delivered speeches about nutrition and body maintenance.

Topics included honey, sleep, martial arts, acupuncture, and massage therapy.

“Women take care of people and often forget to take care of themselves,” Goulden said. “This event...gives [you] some ‘me time’ where you can educate and empower yourself.”

Wendy Nesseth, a health advocate, was a speaker at the event. She discussed the power and benefits of essential oils and yoga.

“In our Bible, there’s over 600 references to essential oils,” she said. “Yoga predates all organized religions, so it’s an ancient practice as well.

“When we bring these two [elements] together, it can be very powerful.”

Nesseth handed out samples of essential oils and led the crowd through a brief yoga session.

“As we age, we lose flexibility,” she said. “When we do stuff to maintain [our body], it can be very beneficial.”

Women at the event had a chance to ask the speakers questions and interact with their fellow attendees.

“Strong women, strong families, strong communities; it all starts with us,” Goulden said. “The everyday heroes.

A follow-up event will be held in Yorkton this September.
