Randy's Picks for the 2014 Yorkton Film Festival

Carpe Diem: A Fishy Tale - Friday, May 23 at 11:00

I am pleased to announce that Nature Saskatchewan and the Yellowhead Flyway Birding Trail Association are sponsoring the screening of Carpe Diem: A Fishy Tale. This is a must-see documentary simply to witness the jumping prowess of the Asian Carp, a species released into the Mississippi River more than 30 years ago. The film shows how experts are trying to find ways to prevent the spread of this aquatic invader into the Great Lakes. Come and discuss everything "fishy" with our panel: filmmaker Charlotte Engel, Adam Matichuk of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation and Rob Wilson of Nature Saskatchewan.

Beautifully Broken: The Life & Work of Rafael Goldchain, Documentary Arts and Culture - Saturday, May 24 at 11:00

This film explores the life of Rafael Goldchain, a celebrated Canadian photographer. His body of work is an intimate study of cultural identity and a past rooted in his Jewish heritage. We are proud to announce that this screening will be sponsored by the Godfrey Dean Art Gallery. Come and talk to filmmaker Marc Cohen about Rafael Goldchain, artist and photographer.

28 Heroes, Documentary History and Biography

We've heard about the brave actions of our military at Vimy Ridge (WWI) and the Italian Campaign (WW II) but we've heard little about the heroism of Canadian forces in the Korean War. This film fills that gap as it re-enacts how our soldiers held the Jamestown line against an all out Chinese frontal attack. This is a gripping story of courage and determination, a memorial to a war we too seldom remember.

The Lost Highway

Once the main road between Ottawa and Toronto, the Lost Highway is now a black ribbon of failed businesses. What happened? And despite the hardship, can two unlikely neighbours turn the local economy around?

The Mysteries of the Crooked Aspen

I always recommend films about Saskatchewan. In this short presentation (only 12 minutes) we see how a typical small town parade and a mysterious grove of aspen cast a spell over locals and visitors alike. Come join in the magic.
