The Yorkton Film Festival kicks off its 67th edition tomorrow with one of the strongest lineups of movies in its history.
"We were very pleased to see over 200 films submitted to this year's festival, and that the quality of the films submitted remains top notch," said Randy Goulden, YFF executive director. "We also saw submissions from several provinces go up in number from last year, which shows the strength and recognition that our festival has throughout Canada."
The festival opens with a special screening of the 87-minute documentary Randy Bachman Vinal Tap Tour: Every Song Tells a Story. The film is a sentimental journey through Bachman's legendary years with the Guess Who and Bachman Turner Overdrive. Showtime is 7 p.m. at Painted Hand Casino.
Over the four days of the festival, organizers will hand out awards in 19 main categories and three craft categories.
"Our craft awards are a perfect opportunity to further recognize, on an individual level, filmmakers from across Canada who are doing tremendous work in the film medium," Goulden said.
One of the filmmakers vying for the craft title of Best Director (fiction) is James Brylowski, who will arrive at city hall Thursday in a two-person donkey costume. Brylowski is director a an absurd short buddy comedy about two brothers who attempt to set a world record by walking from Toronto to Venice, California in the donkey suit.
In a tongue-in-cheek post on Facebook, Brylowski previewed his journey to the Yorkton Film Festival:
"People in 2-person costumes have been repressed for too long. It's time that someone takes a stand in a 2-person costume. I'm making my way from Toronto to Saskatchewan raising awareness. The road has been difficult, but I think people are finally starting to see the light."
