A Yorkton youth who pleaded guilty in August to aggravated assault, theft of a purse and a number of other property offences was sentenced December 13 to 12 months probation and a six month curfew. He will also pay restitution to victims in the amount of $260.

On the afternoon of July 2, an 80-year-old woman was leaving the Parkland mall when a the 15-year-old tried to snatch her purse. When she resisted, the youth pushed her to the ground.

She sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital by paramedics.

Witnesses pointed Yorkton RCMP in the right direction and the teen was soon in custody charged with more than a dozen offences including theft, mischief, break and enter, as well as, drug offences.

He pleaded guilty August 27 to the assault, theft of a purse and a number of other property crimes while several counts were stayed by the Crown. He was scheduled for sentencing October 16.

At the October hearing his defence attorney successfully petitioned for a pre-sentence report and the case was adjourned to December 13.

The pre-sentence report did not make a sentencing recommendation. On Thursday, defence requested a conditional discharge, but Judge Ross Green agreed with the prosecution that the assault on an 80-year-old woman was far too serious to warrant a discharge, which would have left the youth without a criminal record.

For the first six months of his probation, he will be required to abide by a curfew from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
