Health advisories play important role

Sunrise Health Region Community Health Advisory Committees (CHACs) provide the Regional Health Authority with local perspective on health related issues and give a forum for community leaders to take part in interactive sessions at least three times a year.

These volunteers provide input which helps inspire the future strategic direction of health care and members represent the population served by the health region including a diversity of interests, ages, gender, ethnicity and geographic backgrounds.

Youth member Caitlin Thomsen, who is on the Area 1 CHAC committee, was motivated to become involved after a presentation at her school in Kamsack. "I want to be in the health field after high school and this committee gives me an opportunity to learn more," said Thomsen. "I knew being involved in CHAC would give me new opportunities and open doors for me."

Youth from around the region are encouraged to become involved in the Community Health Advisory Committees and applications are always accepted.

The time commitment for members is not significant, allowing students optimum time to remain dedicated to school and extracurricular activities. Participation in CHAC is voluntary; members are reimbursed travel costs for attending meetings.

General information, the list of CHAC committee members, Terms of Reference and the application form for the Community Health Advisory Committees is available on the Sunrise Health Region website, www.sunrisehealthregion.sk.ca under About Us/ Community Health Advisory or by calling (306) 786-0109.
