City of Yorkton 75th Anniversary

On April 15, 1957 the City Administrators began plans for the celebration of 75 years of settlement, but decided to hold the festivities in 1958. If you are not aware of this detail, looking at the 1958 crest pictured here causes some confusion. The City did straighten this out when they celebrated 100 years of settlement in 1982. That year, the Centennial Committee published a book Yorkton - York Colony To Treasure Chest City. Therein the author describes the settlement of the Yorkton region, by the York Farmers Colonization Company of Toronto, thereby affirming the date of the founding of Yorkton to be 1882. The crest is a donation to the Archives by Jim and Maureen Gibney of Calgary, Alta.
