The City of Yorkton landfill will continue to accept garbage from neighbouring municipalities following a unanimous decision by Council at its regular meeting Monday.
"On June 17, 2011, City Council granted Administration the authorization to renew or enter into agreements with out-of-city customers like towns, villages, rural municipalities and businesses that pick up out-of-city refuse and haul to the City of Yorkton landfill," explained Michael Buchholzer, Director of Environmental Services.
The resolution was granted for the remainder of 2011 through to 2013, with an option that these agreements could be renewed for an additional two year term with the consent of both parties.
"These smaller jurisdictions and customers have no other approved sites that are within close proximity for waste disposal. Out of city refuse accounts for 10 per cent of incoming material," said Buchholzer, adding "The City currently accepts refuse from 22 RM's, villages and towns."
Other jurisdictions do pay a higher fee.
The current rate for out of city refuse accepted at the landfill is $75/tonne comparably, in city residential refuse hauled by residents to the landfill is charged $45/tonne as approved by City Council. The out-of-city disposal rate will increase to $80/tonne in 2015. All new agreements will be presented and approved by the Environmental Committee., explained Buchholzer.
