Maria's has a cool vibe.

When you walk into the cozy new ethnic beauty supply shop on Betts Avenue you are greeted with the vibrant colours of Jamaica and the laid-back groove of reggae.

Maria Cole emigrated from the island nation of Bob Marley, Blue Mountain coffee, jerk chicken and Appleton Rum 11 years ago to be with her mom in Winnipeg. Three years ago she moved to Melville with a business administration degree and years of post-secondary education in everything business-related.

With immigration rapidly changing the face of the Parkland, she saw an opportunity to cash in on a growing niche market.

"As I see Yorkton developing, I think 'why is there nothing for me, for people like me'," she said. "It's the perfect time."

Maria's was born. The shop specializes in hair extensions, wigs, beauty products and clothing. She is also bringing in a line of spices and ethnic food products.

Before her grand opening on November 25, people looking for specialized ethnic beauty products had to travel to Regina or Saskatoon.

But while many of the goods she carries are designed for black people, Maria's is not exclusive.

"Everyone can make use of the store," she said. "If you like the music, come on down."
