Another historic building in Yorkton has been claimed by fire.

The old curling rink at Tupper Avenue and South Front Street went up in flames October 8. By the time firefighters arrived the building was fully ablaze and they had to turn their attention to protecting nearby structures from the fire spreading.

Several residences were evacuated affecting approximately 25 people.

Trevor Morrissey, Yorkton fire chief said investigators are treating the fire as suspicious only because of the circumstances. The building has been unoccupied for some time, but was being renovated, he said. A significant amount of work had been done toward converting it to a storage building, but there was nobody using it at the time and no immediate indication of a cause.

The investigation is ongoing. Morrisey said the RCMP is also involved.

There was no damage to any other buildings in the area and no persons were injured.

The building has not been used for curling since the mid-1970s when the Gallagher Centre was built.
