Sunrise Health Region and the Town of Canora are pleased to announce that Dr. Mala Singh will move from Mississauga, Ontario to set up practice in Canora and will begin seeing clients on June 16, 2014.
Dr. Singh will work out of the Canora Medical Clinic with Drs. Newstead and Egbagbe and Nurse Practitioner, Lorri Dennis. She joins the team developing the collaborative emergency centre (CEC) model of care.
"We are very pleased that Dr. Singh has decided to practice in Canora," says Mayor Terry Dennis. "I know that our community will warmly welcome her."
The Town of Canora and Sunrise Health Region are working together to recruit a fourth physician. It is believed that the CEC model will attract physicians and other health care professionals interested in working in a team environment that promotes balanced work and personal life.
"Access to appointments at the medical clinic will increase when Dr. Singh starts her practice," says Director of Health Services, Joanne Bodnar. "The availability of appointments at the medical clinic is important to the public and allows the hospital to return to its focus of acute and emergency care."
When fully in place, the CEC model will offer a robust set of primary health care services and consistent 24/7 emergency coverage for the public.
Upcoming Changes
Beginning on May 1, 2014, clients going for laboratory or x-ray work at the Canora Hospital must bring with them the requisition form from the medical clinic. Faxing of requisitions will no longer occur. The laboratory or x-ray requisition form must be brought with the client so that the hospital staff can enter the information from the form into the registration system. The registration system tracks admissions, discharges and transfers for a patient and links together different clinical applications; for example - digital x-rays and laboratory results.
After June 16, 2014, the Canora physicians will see only those requiring emergency care in the Canora Hospital emergency room. People needing non-emergency attention will be directed to make an appointment at the medical clinic. This change in practice will keep the emergency room available for emergencies.
The CEC model will ultimately involve co-location of the Canora Medical Clinic into the Canora Hospital building. The timeline for the renovations and the amount of provincial funding available for the renovations are not yet known. Further updates will be provided as this project progresses.
