Police are refusing to release any information about a “potentially dangerous situation” they responded to on Monday afternoon that prompted three local schools to implement the “hold and secure” protocol.
Yorkton Regional High School, Sacred Heart High School and Dr. Brass were the affected schools.
The situation was resolved in just 10 minutes, an RCMP Facebook post stated, but did not give any details on the situation or why it was a possible public safety concern.
“There was no immediate threat to the schools or any of the students,” the post stated. “The hold and secure was done as a precautionary measure only. The situation was resolved quickly and without incident.”
Cpl. Terry Hyggen did confirm an arrest was made, but said the case was “not newsworthy.”
There is no court in Yorkton this week due to a Crown prosecutors conference in Saskatoon, so no further information could be gleaned from court documents or proceedings.
There was public speculation that an incident at the Co-op grocery store the same afternoon involving a number of police vehicles might be related, but Hyggen said they were not.
“Hold and secure” is a protocol during which external doors are locked, but normal school operations continue inside as opposed to a “lockdown” in which students and staff are also secured within the school.
