Premier Brad Wall, on behalf of the people of Saskatchewan, offered condolences and support to the people of Japan and those affected by the overwhelming destruction of Friday's earthquake and tsunami. The Premier also pledged $250,000 that will be sent to assist with relief efforts through the Red Cross.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Japan as they do their best to cope with this devastating situation," Wall said. "Our condolences go out to those who have lost loved ones or are still waiting to hear from family members at this time. Saskatchewan people are always quick to lend a hand to their neighbours and those in need and this is no exception."
Wall also pledged Saskatchewan assistance through Corrections and Public Safety (CPSP), the ministry responsible for disaster relief efforts.
"CPSP has been in contact all weekend with Public Safety Canada," Wall said. "We want to ensure that if any Saskatchewan experts or expertise can assist in Japan, we're ready to go as soon as possible."
The earthquake was the fifth strongest earthquake on record in 100 years and the strongest earthquake ever in Japan. It is estimated that well over 10,000 lives may have been lost.
