Wild chase
A 38-year-old Melville man remains in custody following a hair-raising police chase on the weekend.
Sean Carson was remanded in Yorkton court Tuesday morning on charges of possession of property over $5,000 obtained by crime, operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and mischief over $5,000.
On the evening of April 26, Melville/Ituna RCMP were alert to a possible stolen all-terrain vehicle being hauled by trailer from the Yorkton area.
Police picked up the suspect vehicle and engaged with it southbound on Hwy 47 near Killaly, but the driver, who police allege they recognized as Carson, made several evasive moves drawing officers into a chase down grid roads and onto private property. Police were forced to abandon the chase when rough terrain prevented their vehicles from pursuing.
The driver of the suspect vehicle headed back toward the highway where a civilian vehicle attempted to block the approach, but the suspect simply struck the vehicle and continued to flee down Hwy 47.
The Melville members radioed ahead to the Broadview detachment to set up a spike belt but the suspect avoided that and once again police called off the pursuit to avoid danger to the public as the vehicle approached the busy Hwy 1.
Civilians continued to follow and eventually the suspect vehicle got stuck on a grid road near Indian Head where he fled on foot.
Police picked up Carson on Sunday in Melville.
The RCMP said there are other ongoing investigations in Yorkton, Melville, Broadview and Indian Head related to this case.
Another adult male is also in custody, but is yet to be identified or charged.
Carson will make his next appearance at a bail hearing in Yorkton court May 13.
Bear spray robbery
An odd case of robbery by bear spray in Kamsack on Sunday resulted in charges of robbery, assault with a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of weapon dangerous to public, resisting arrest and breaching a probation order.
On April 27 in the evening, Kamsack RCMP allege Aaron Ironstand, 18, accosted a two males aged 21 and 14 and demanded their personal belongings. The victims turned over money and a cell phone and got bear sprayed for their troubles. Both were treated at hospital and released.
At a court appearance in Yorkton Tuesday, Ironstand was remanded in custody pending a bail hearing May 6 at Kamsack court.
