The tradition of the Christmas tree - a pine or fir began in Germany as far back as the 1500s. It became popular beyond Germany during the mid-1800s. Candles to represent stars or the star of Bethlehem were glued on the tree with melted wax, or clipped and later were placed in candleholders. To many Christians, the star represented a miraculous sign of the coming of the Messiah. The light from the candles made for beautiful trees, but it was also dangerous. Electric lights replaced the candles around the 1920s.
