At least one Yorkton resident has been targeted by a new traffic ticket scam that first appeared in Calgary in March.

Potential victims receive an email, ostensibly from the Saskatchewan courts, urging them to pay an outstanding fine. The attached .zip file, posing as the alleged ticket, would likely install a phishing virus on the computer according to police.

The local recipient of the scam email did not open the file and turned the email over to the Court of Queen’s bench.

Saskatchewan courts do not correspond with traffic offenders via email.

The RCMP advises people not to open anything or click on links in unsolicited email correspondence. Suspicious emails can be reported to the local RCMP detachment at 306-786-2400. Attempted, or actual, fraud can also be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
