A 30-year-old Yorkton man is going to prison for a year after pleading guilty Monday to two counts of trafficking cocaine.
Adam Geysen was one of 20 people caught up in an undercover drug sting dubbed Operation Fanalyst that ran from the fall of 2012 through early 2013.
At a sentencing hearing May 12, federal prosecutor Shane Wagner outlined the circumstances to the Court that on two occasions, one in December 2012 and another in January 2013, Geysen had acted as an intermediary between an undercover RCMP officer and a cocaine dealer.
He was also initially charged with uttering threats for suggesting to the officer that something bad would happen if he turned out to be a cop. The Crown later withdrew that charge, but Wagner drew the Court's attention to the fact such a threat would have put the accused in mandatory minimum sentence territory had the defence and Crown not reached the joint submission of 12 months.
Thomas Campbell for the defence cited the mitigating circumstance that his client had never received any money from the sale of cocaine.
In his own defence, Geysen explained to the judge that as a result of the charges he had lost a good job and was faced with starting over.
"I'm not a bad person," he said.
Judge Ross Green accepted the joint submission and ordered the mandatory 10-year firearms prohibition and DNA sample associated with trafficking Schedule 1 drugs.
