Yorkton United girls claim silver in Saskatoon

The Yorkton United Girls claimed silver in the Saskatoon Harder Avalon Classic tournament on May 30-June 1. The team was entered in the U18 division although the majority of the Yorkton players were in the U16 and U14 age category.


The Yorkton United Girls claimed silver in the Saskatoon Harder Avalon Classic tournament on May 30-June 1. The team was entered in the U18 division although the majority of the Yorkton players were in the U16 and U14 age category.

The first game on Friday night was against Humboldt. This game seaw Yorkton jump out to an early lead on a goal by Allison Berge.

Bryce Sherring followed that up quickly to put the squad up by two.

Yorkton went on to handily win the game 5-0.

Allison Berge led the team with two goals, while singles were added by Sherring, Darrian Desjarlais and Taryn Kustra.

Kendra Varjassy added three assists and Alli Debnam picked up the shutout.

The second game of the tournament Saturday morning seen the Saskatoon Aurora Riot as the opposition.

Once again Yorkton came out quick with Sherring finding the twine. Sherring added a second goal with singles coming from Kustra and Varjassy for a 4-0 victory for Yorkton.

Once again the defence and goal tending was stellar with Debnam picking up her second blank slate.

The final round robin game was a showdown for first place in the pool against the Saskatoon Aurora Majestic.

This turned out to be a hard fought battle that saw Sherring open the scoring on a nice feed from Varjassy.

Aurora came back to tie it up early in the second half, only to see Desjarlais restore the lead for Yorkton.

The Aurora club came back late to force a 2-2 tie.

Based on goal differential this result gave Yorkton first place in the pool and set up a Sunday morning semi-final with Saskatoon Aurora Mirage.

This game was as physical a soccer game that many have seen with the Aurora club using all tactics possible to slow down the Yorkton squad.

Once again the Sherring-Varjassy combination opened the scoring with Sherring bending the twine on a feed from Varjassy.

The score stayed 1-0 until late in the second half when Allison Berge was able to give Yorkton a 2-0 lead on a nice setup from Roma Zulyniak.

The 2-0 win sent the Yorkton squad to the final against Swift Current.

The final was a back and back forth chess match that was scoreless at the half.

Swift Current was able to open the scoring midway through the second half and rode the momentum to a 3-0 victory.

The Yorkton squad claimed the silver medal and had a very successful weekend.

Next action for the team is June 13-15 at the Saskatoon Eastside tournament.
