At 10 years old, Kim Burns' life changed dramatically when a car accident caused a severe brain injury. The brain injury has significantly complicated her life, but not her drive or determination. That determination has led her to become a top fundraiser for the Brain Boogie in support of the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association (SBIA).
Kim's box of homemade cookies and "You know you want them!" grin are with her whenever she goes out into the community. Kim is always thinking of new ways to raise money, whether it is a new cookie recipe, a new craft to create or recruiting her family and friends to hold a large garage sale. Every August, they gather in Regina’s Wascana Park, armed with pledges and team spirit to celebrate Kim’s achievements and to raise funds at the Brain Boogie. The Brain Boogie supports the local programs, which mean so much to Kim, her family and others like them throughout the province who find support through them.
The Brain Boogie is a morning event that consists of a walk or run followed by a family fun celebration held in five cities around the province. It takes place on August 24, 2019 in Regina's Wascana Park, August 25, 2019 in Moose Jaw's Crescent Park, September 7, 2019 at Prince Albert Elks Hall and Yorkton Cherry Hill Golf Course and September 8, 2019 in Saskatoon's Victoria Park. This event is anticipated all year by SBIA’s enthusiastic members.
Each location adds a different spin on the event. In Regina, the Saskatchewan Roughrider cheerleaders lead a warm up; in Moose Jaw, a local yoga studio leads it. In Saskatoon, the Coors Light CRUSH Dancers lead a warm up & cheer on participants. In Yorkton, the event is held as a golf tournament and steak night. The Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association strives to prevent brain injuries and to improve the lives of those impacted by brain injury. Brain injury is the number one killer and disabler of children and those under the age of 44. SBIA aims to change these statistics through awareness and events like the Brain Boogie.
