It could be that before the end of the summer a major water main replacement project could be underway in Canora.

At its meeting on May 3, Canora council agreed to make application to the Local Government Committee of the Saskatchewan Municipal Board to undertake the project of replacing the water mains from Main Street to Norway Road on Second Avenue East, Third Avenue East and Fourth Avenue East.

The project is to cost $644,795 and council expects to receive $132,000 from New Deal funding to contribute towards that cost.

Property owners on the affected avenues will first be given the option of endorsing or objecting to the project and if they approve, construction may begin as early as August.

The project is to replace old cast iron water mains that are failing, said Michael Mykytyshyn, the Chief Administrative Officer.

Also during the meeting, council appointed Tammy Bobyk to the Canora Leisure Services Board.

It was agreed to purchase the Town’s general and liability insurance for 2016-17 at the rate of $49,951 with SGI Community Insurance.

At council’s regular meeting of May 17, Jo-Anne Sigurdson was hired as interim community development officer for the duration of Brandi Zavislak’s maternity leave.

Authorization was granted for depositing the demolition debris from the Viterra elevator at the Canora landfill for a flat fee of $30,000 with all excavation, covering and monitoring of the site at the expense of the contractor, Adair’s Demolition of Southey. The authorization is on condition that all Saskatchewan Environmental requirements are met.

One member of the Leisure Services Board was authorized to attend the Parkland Valley Sport, Culture and Recreation District’s annual general meeting being held in Yorkton on June 8.

Councillor Syl Hrynkiw was authorized to attend the Parkland College graduation exercises being held June 10 in Yorkton.
