An exciting new win was recorded for the Canora Novice Black Cobras, who won a tournament championship for the first time in years.
The Canora Novice Black Cobras were named champions at the Wadena novice tournament held on January 7 by beating three teams in round robin play.
The first game was against the Humboldt Broncos, which the Cobras won 5-2, followed by a game against the Wadena Panthers, which was won by the novice black team 2-0. All seven goals were scored by Chase Hembling, who was named Most Valuable Player for the Humboldt game. Katherine Hauber was honoured with the Hustler Award for that game.
For the Wadena game, goalie Linden Roebuck was both named Most Valuable Player and honoured with the Hustler Award due to his shut-out performance, said coach Jeff Sznerch.
In the A final, the Canora Novice Black Cobras defeated the Kelvington Wheat Kings with a score of 5-3. Hembling scored three goals for the game and Kayden Harder and Wyatt Wolkowski both scored one each to clinch the title. Wolkowski was awarded on his performance with the Hustler Award and Most Valuable Player title.
“In all the years we’ve coached this group we’ve never managed to win a tournament championship so this win is really special for the team,” said Sznerch, who said the win reinforces the hard work and effort all the players have put into the season and the pride of the coaches.
“I know this taste of success will act as a motivator for the remainder of the season.”
