Canora, Rama and Invermay candidates nominated in municipal council elections

With nomination day completed on September 21 and polling beginning October 26, the candidates for mayor and town council have been selected. In Canora, Mayor Gina Rakochy is running for mayor once again. Running against her is Glen Leson.

            Incumbent council members who are running for the six seats on council this election are Brad Gabora, Cory O’Dell, Syl Hyrnkiw, Gerald Wolkowski and James Trofimenkoff. Others who are seeking a seat on councilinclude Sheldon Derkatch, Eric Sweeney, Kerry Trask, Brent Pelechaty, Michael Stechuk, and Robert Dorush.

            An open candidates’ forum will be held on October 5 at 7 p.m. All 12 candidates will be welcome to speak at the Rainbow Hall regarding their platforms. Written questions will be presented by the moderator, Rod Gardner, upon approval by a screening committee. The event will be attended by all non-incumbents, and incumbent council members are also invited.

            In Invermay, Michael Kaminski was elected mayor by acclamation. The councillors, who have all been acclaimed, are Tracey Fey, Allen LaChance, and Allan Peshko. Joyce Palagian, the administrator, said that the village is accepting further nominations for the remaining seat.

            The mayor of Rama is Darrell Dutchak, who was re-elected by acclamation, and the two councillors, also re-elected by acclamation, are Phillip Shewchuk and Evan Matsalla.

            For the Rural Municipality of Keys, the incumbent reeve, Vivian Morgan, is running against Leslie Hryhoriu. In Divisions 1 and 3, current councillor Garth Bates and new councillor Donald Kraynick are in by acclamation. A vote will be held regarding the Div. 5 councillor, and the two nominees running are incumbent Ken Lozinski and Lorne Gazdewich.

            In the RM of Sliding Hills, the current reeve, Harvey Malanowich, is being opposed by Blake Cairns. The three councillors who were re-elected by acclamation are Ron Rozema, Div. 1; Murray Mudrey, Div. 3; and Janet Ostafie, Div. 5.

            In the RM of Good Lake, David Popowich will remain as reeve, having been re-elected by acclamation. In Div. 1, Harvey Wegner was re-elected by acclamation. In Div. 2, Larry Kopan and James Morton are running against each other. Current councillors Robert Steffenson and David Moroz were re-elected by acclamation for Div. 3 and Div. 5, respectively.

            Good Spirit School Division also finalized nominations for board members. Shannon Leson has been re-elected by acclamation for sub-division No. 3, which includes the Canora area.
