A total of 15 new babysitters have been certified to provide services for the Canora area because of the Canora Wheatland Lioness Club’s annual babysitting course.

Canora Wheatland Lioness Club members proudly announced and recommended the 15 most recent graduates of the Saskatchewan Safety Council’s Babysitter Training Course, who finished the course on November 22. Each student enrolled in the course successfully completed all required assignments, practicum experience activities and concluded the course by achieving the compulsory passing final examination mark.

Shawna Leson, Canora Wheatland Lioness Club member and course leader, facilitated the six-week course which ran from October 18 to November 22. She was assisted by community members educated in each particular field the babysitting course covered.

Lessons were instructed by Leson, who taught babysitter basics; Kelly Strelioff, Child Care I and II; Sherise Fountain, safety smarts and handling emergencies; Neal Reine, first aid, and Chris Danyluk, playing with children. The practicum that students were required to complete before graduating included a minimum of four unpaid hours of babysitting for a local family and involved feedback provided by the parents, Leson said.

Leson administered the final examination as provided by Saskatchewan Safety Council.

Leson said that the Canora Wheatland Lioness Club acknowledges the presenters and parents for their continued support of the program, as well as Canora Composite School staff, who provided classroom space for the course.

“Each student has received a certificate and is enthusiastically prepared to babysit,” Leson said.
