About 300 cheeseburgers were cooked and sold last week in a fundraiser for the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute SADD (Students Against Drinking and Driving) group.

Held at noon on October 7, the event included the cooking of the meat patties by members of the Kamsack RCMP detachment. Flipping the patties on barbecue units were: Cst. Kimberly Mackey, Cst. Dana Harris, S/Sgt. Kirk Badger and Cst. Jon Neima.

The burgers were sold to students, staff and members of the community along with a drink, said Kaylie Bowes, SADD president. A cheeseburger with soft drink cost only $4.

Several community businesses and individuals made donations to the event, she said. Among them were: Fedoruk Seeds, which donation 30 pounds of onions; Wolkowski Funeral Service, meat patties; Duck Mountain Ambulance Care, cash and The Edge Business Solutions, a banner which will be used to advertise the SADD group at many SADD initiatives.

During the noon hour SADD members released 44 helium-filled red balloons in memory of the 44 persons who died on Saskatchewan roads in alcohol-related incidents in 2013, she said.

The KCI SADD group thanks community members and the school for their support, she said, adding that among the projects the group plans to undertake with the funds raised is to erect two more highway signs with the slogan: “You booze, you cruise, you lose.”

Among KCI staff members who work with the SADD group are Wendy Shabatoski and Lee Bowes.
