Combines were rolling in the field harvesting 145 acres of oats that were seeded with the purpose of a fundraiser for the Sturgis Composite School playground equipment.

Jerry Carlson provided the land that was rented which is located two miles west of Crystal Lake.

"Despite battling cutworms, grasshoppers and drought, the crop netted a yield of approximately 100 bushels per acre, which is a huge success," said Dean Serdachny, an organizer.

There were 20 volunteers who helped in the harvesting on August 24. Serdachny Farms provided the oat seed and was also responsible for the seeding and spraying. Jason Peterson and Kelly Masley were responsible for swathing the crop.

Helping to combine and providing the combines for the field were: Gaye and Tyler Peniuk of Peniuk Farms with drivers Cody Link and Kykle Bileski; Serdachny Farms, and Jerry Carlson and Pattison Agricultural with Tim Olson and Conrad Peterson doing the driving for Pattison.

Dean Serdachny provided his tractor and grain cart for loading and unloading the grain.

The oats were loaded and trucked to Grain Millers in Yorkton. Providing the trucking were Brian Morken; Serdachny Farms with Walter Rose driving; Patrick Kardynal; Carlson Farms with Dick Morken driving, and Peniuk Farms.
