Government distributes charitable gaming grants worth more than $1.2 million

The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) is supporting groups and organizations in the province by providing more than $1.2 million in charitable gaming grants.

            “Our government is pleased to acknowledge the fundraising efforts of volunteer groups and organizations by providing them with this additional financial support,” said Jeremy Harrison, Minister responsible for SLGA.  “The grants will help groups and organizations further contribute to local programming that benefits everyone from children to seniors.”

            More than 700 organizations across Saskatchewan received charitable gaming grants during the third quarter of the fiscal year.

            At Kamsack a total of $2,230 was received. The KK Fundraising Organization received $1,144, while the Kamsack branch of the Royal Canadian Legion received $1,086.

            At Pelly $887 was received. The Fort Pelly-Livingstone Museum received $95; the Pelly and District Lions Club, $85, and the Pelly Happy Hearts Club, $707.

            At Preeceville, $247 was received. The Preeceville and District Lioness Club received $132, while the Preeceville Curling Inc. obtained $115.

            At Sturgis, $4,794 was received. The Kinsmen Club of Sturgis received $3,111; the Father Novak Council of the Knights of Columbus, $150, and the Sturgis Community Bingo, $1,534.

            At Togo, $722 was received; all of it by the Togo Silver Threat Inc.

            At Canora a total of $4,796 was granted. The Canora Junior Elementary School received $522; Canora Minor Hockey, $3,982, and the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League, $292.

            At Buchanan, where $698 was received, the Buchanan and District Recreation Board received $223, and St. Anne’s Parish, $475.

            Among other recipients were: Yorkton and area charities: $86,132; Swift Current and area charities: $35,090; the Queen City Kinsmen Club Inc.: $18,980; Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service Foundation (STARS): $100,358; and the Foam Lake Recreation Centre: $42,398.

            The charitable gaming grant program supports groups and organizations that conduct charitable gaming including licensed bingos, raffles, break-open tickets, Texas Hold ’em poker and Monte Carlo events. Groups and organizations receive a grant equal to 25 per cent of the net revenues raised from these activities.

            Charitable gaming reports submitted by the groups are used by SLGA to automatically calculate individual grants.
