Grass cut at ski hill makes for earlier grooming

It took a volunteer and mower a couple days last week to cut the grass on about 70 per cent of the slopes at the Duck Mountain Ski Hill.
Using equipment loaned by Nykolaishen Farm Equipment, Warren Todosichuk, a long-time supporter of the hill, mowed the grass on the “green side” of the hill, which are the slopes serviced by the green tow rope.
It was not possible to mow the other runs because of a large amount of water, Todosichuk said.
Having the grass cut means staff will be able to groom and pack the snow earlier, thereby creating a better base, Rita Brock said on Friday. If the grass had been left uncut, it would have been necessary to wait for enough snow to fall to weigh the tall grass down before grooming and packing could begin.
Rita and Craig Brock will be returning as the hill’s managers for a second consecutive year, said Shelley Filipchuk, a member of the ski hill’s board.
“We have big plans for the hill this year,” Filipchuk said.
The snowboard park will be redesigned, Rita Brock said. Other plans will have to be discussed by the board before being announced.
The ski hill will be having a booth at the trade show being held during the annual Kamsack Indoor Rodeo the weekend of September 25 and 26, Brock said. Planning has begun for two fundraisers for the hill: the Duck Scramble golf tournament on September 20 and a Boxing Day dance at the Madge Lake recreation hall.
Craig and Rita Brock are marking their third summer as managers of the Whitesand Regional Park north of Theodore.
