Group considering options to bring affordable seniors’ housing to Canora

            The meeting was held on August 22 to discuss the possible formation of an investors’ group to bring an active adult residence complex to Canora. Many options were discussed at the meeting, said Zavislak.

            The goals of the group are fairly straightforward: to keep retired people in the community and create affordable housing for them, something which is presently not available in Canora, she said.

            “Instead of retired farmers and others moving to neighbouring communities such as Yorkton, it would be nice if Canora could provide them with what they’re looking for, she said. Many of these seniors have worked hard their entire lives and this transition and downsizing can be very overwhelming and stressful.

            “I would like to make this process easier for them,” said Zavislak.

            She went on to add that this housing complex could potentially attract new residents to Canora from nearby communities such as Buchanan, Rama, Invermay, Mikado and others.

            Since seniors are usually on a fixed income, cost is a major factor. But it’s still important to have conveniences such as an attached garage due to unpredictable Saskatchewan weather.

            Another important consideration is having opportunities to spend time with friends and meet new neighbours, so a housing complex that includes a common room would be an important consideration.

            There are two possible housing complex ideas that could benefit Canora, said Zavislak.

One option would be focused mainly on seniors living, and located close to the Canora Nursing Home. It would consist of a single level with several attached garage spaces and a common room, she said.

            “The second option would be for a complex to be geared toward any age of adult living where there is a hotel unit on the main floor and condo units on the top two floors,” she said. “This would cater to doctors, nurses, teachers, and other professional adults.”

            If there is sufficient interest in the project, the group expects to organize another meeting, including a detailed presentation from the developer.
