The Kamsack branch of the Royal Canadian Legion plans to be much more visible during 2016, which is the branch’s 90th anniversary.

“We are well into 2016 and our new executive has had its first meeting,” said Jim Woodward, president, adding that many activities for the year have already been planned.

Serving on the executive committee with Woodward are: Sharon Rudy, second vice-president; Robert Boudreau, third vice-president; Judy Green, secretary; John Adamyk, treasurer; Barry Golay, service officer; Stephen Ruten, chaplain, and Diana Belovanoff and Vera Kuzma, trustees. Audrey Girling, Jamie Snyder, Francis MacIsaac and Cindi Evans (appointed) are executive members at large. Executive positions not filled are: past president, first vice-president and sergeant-at-arms.

“We have taken steps to assist Kerri Lindsay in starting up a bagpipe school,” Woodward said. “The Kamsack Legion will be working with the Kamsack volunteer fire fighters to bring the “Chase the Ace” program to the community; we have started another 50/50 draw and there are plans in the works to bring on a few other events.”

The date of May 15 has been set for the dedication ceremony for the HMCS Kamsack Memorial, he said. After struggling with the Canadian dollar the decision was made to ensure the second phase of our memorial brick project would be completed before Decoration Day in June.

“Our commitment to assisting the Kamsack Air Cadets with a level of sponsorship remains in place for another year.”

Many local awards were given out to the school students for their involvement in the annual poster and poem contest for Remembrance week, he said. Many are encouraged to play an active part again this year.

“The Kamsack Legion thanks our community for its continued support and looks forward to seeing many at upcoming special events,” he said. “Over the last year, we were pleased to have had our hall rented by other service groups and again look forward to supporting them in the future.

“We even had our first wedding and baby shower since our main floor was updated, plus a couple funerals,” he said. “We have a rental structure for a venue that can accommodate almost any medium-sized event on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“The Legion welcomes new members and would like to see the community out at all of our functions,” he said, adding that many people enjoy the Legion’s weekly Saturday bingos. He encourages persons to visit the Legion’s Facebook page and visit the website at www.kamsacklegion.ca.
