KCI library transformed into the Bookworm Café for Education Week

With comfortable seating, entertainment and beverages, the library at the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute took on “a cool vibe” like a city bookstore.

It was called the Bookworm Café and although it happened during the lunch hour on October 22 and 23 as an Education Week initiative, it was so popular it may well happen again before long.

The tables and seating in the library was rearranged in order to create a more homey and comfortable setting, Julie Gareau, who with Claire Bishop organized the café, said last week.

The idea was to get the students to see the library in a different fashion, she said, adding that she and Bishop were helped by many members of the staff.

The café featured an open mic both days which was used by singers and piano players. One person recited an original poem, one student sang while another accompanied her on guitar, there was a karate demonstration, a drum circle and a performance by an Octoberfest band.

Over 100 students attended the café, she said. Staff members acting as baristas served tea and hot chocolate and homemade cookies baked by the Grade 8 home economics students.

“The kids have been asking for another café,” she said, adding that another session will probably be held prior to Christmas.
