The City of Yorkton is promoting a new service now available to local residents.

SaskAlert is the Government of Saskatchewan’s comprehensive emergency public alerting program. Yorkton joined the service in 2015 and has been tweaking it for launch. Last week, it became fully functional.

Alerts about local emergencies including tornadoes, plow winds, blizzards, wildfires, hazardous material spills, train derailments, drinking water advisories, floods and evacuations will be broadcast on TV and radio networks and are available on saskalert.ca.

However, the real new benefit for individuals, the City says, is a smartphone app available for iPhone and Android. It can be downloaded for free from the Apple Store and Google Play and provides real-time coverage of developing events.

It is not available for Blackberry, but there is a workaround. Blackberry users can simply add the SaskAlert page to their home screens for easy access to alerts.
