Outlook Town Council News & Notes - May 9

The town council of Outlook met for a regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday night, May 9.

The town council of Outlook met for a regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday night, May 9.  Present were councillors Donna Smith, Kyle McLeod, Maureen Applin and Floyd Childerhose, as well as Mayor Ross Derdall, Assistant Administrator/Finance Officer Steven Brown, Superintendent of Municipal Operations Randy Antoniuk, and outgoing Assistant Administrator Laurie Lemon in her final town council meeting.

Absent was Administrator Dean Pickering, Councillor David Simonson and Recreation Director Jordy Jones.

A number of topics and items were discussed, including the following highlights:

  • A discussion was held in-camera between council and the town’s Bylaw Enforcement Officer Ron Klassen.
  • In the Rec Report, Jones noted how most people have seemed to be understanding as it relates to the announcement made about the swimming pool’s delayed opening, as some people have said that they expected a delay to begin with.
  • Bowling has started over at the bowling alley, and there’s been a renewed push to promote it as an entertainment option.  The town is interested to see how it goes over with the public and how busy the facility may get.
  • Town work crews were expected to start work on pothole repairs this week, and Antoniuk said they’ve ordered paint for crosswalks and fire hydrants.
  • Council carried a motion for the purchase of an online system for the town’s water treatment plant, with a price tag of approximately $16,662 plus taxes.
  • The WaterWolf organization will be holding an Annual General Meeting on June 25 at the Heritage Centre in Outlook.  Councillor Applin says the group is starting to get things together and starting to see some results.
  • A quote has been received for DataSafe Recovery Services, which is for emergency response planning.  Brown noted how they can be “a lot of work”, but Applin said having it might be a prudent thing for the town and neighboring communities, and she is set to bring more information and an example of output results to the next meeting.
  • Taking a small break from the meeting, cupcakes were handed out to mark Laurie’s last town council meeting before her retirement.
  • Council moved to sponsor the senior men’s Outlook River Hawks baseball team.
  • The annual Town of Outlook BBQ was set for June 18 at the Rec Plex.
  • Council acknowledged the SaskEnergy Municipal Surcharge.
  • Council passed a motion to cancel their SUMA group benefits as of May 31, and passed a motion to enter into a new benefits plan as of June 1.
  • A discussion was had on sponsorship as it relates to the swimming pool, as businesses can have their logo installed on the flooring of the building.  A 2x2 (feet) logo would cost approximately $250, though it remains to be seen if those dimensions could be altered.  The town will find out the firm pricing on logos and bring information back to the next meeting.
