The In Motion competition will run from March 1 to 10, Maggie Lukey said.

Discussing the Communiplex Management Board (CMB), Ruth Demetrick and Maggie Lukey said that the exhaust fans have been repaired, all the rink lights have been successfully replaced, the ice surface was repaired since the melt at the beginning of the month, and the facility was booked February 27 for the 15th Annual Kinsmen Telemiracle Deep-Fried Turkey Supper Fundraiser.

Regarding curling, Vaughn Demetrick said that the 18-team mixed open bonspiel held January 18 to 24 was very successful. The competition was won by the Neil Watkins rink of Swan River.

The curling club has purchased a new food concession table, he said, adding that the high school curling wind-up bonspiel was held February 10, and the seniors’ bonspiel, February 22 to 26. The Legion bonspiel is to be held March 5 and 6; the women’s bonspiel, March 8 to 13, and the men’s March 14 to 20.

Wing Nights remain very successful, Demetrick said, thanking all the volunteers who have contributed to making the events so successful. “Additional volunteers are always welcome,” he said.

Laura Dahl said that the Walking Club will continue to meet until the end of March on Monday and Wednesday mornings.

Discussing Norquay School activities, Nicole Korpusik said that the junior boys and girls basketball teams had hosted conference playoffs, while the senior boys hosted their home tournament on February 5 and 6 with eight teams attending. The boys won the B side, while Middle Lake won the A side. The junior and senior curling teams finished their season and had a wind-up on February 10.

Junior drama rehearsals continue every Thursday, while senior drama practices are being held Wednesdays, Korpusik said. The perogy supper is scheduled for April 6 at the school gymnasium.

The grades 10 and 12 ski trip to Asessippi was held February 11, and the grades 3 to 6 ski trip is to be on March 8, she said.

            Regarding the NICE Centre, Delphine Howard reported that grant money is being used to purchase eight new tables, a potluck supper was held February 14, and there will likely be a steak dinner or supper on St. Patrick’s Day on March 17.

            Discussing chamber of commerce initiatives, Nicole Korpusik said that there are still tables available for reservation for the Norquay Trade Show being held March 18 and 19. Persons wishing to reserve a table, may phone Reagan Foster.

            Foster and Korpusik are planning to attend seminars on the structure and function of successful chambers of commerce which are being held in Saskatoon yesterday and today (March 2 and 3).

Lilia Livingstone said that more than 325 people had attended the “very successful” Malanka banquet and dance on January 23.

The dance club will be ordering jackets from Sew Unique Embroidery of Norquay, Livingstone said, adding that on March 18, members of the dance club will be serving lunch at the Norquay Trade Show, with the menu to include perogies, smokies and borscht.

Iris Nokinsky said that the Health Auxiliary has booked a booth at the trade show, where members will be taking donations for the next phase of completing the secure outdoor area at the Norquay Health Centre. The auxiliary is also asking for donations for raffle baskets, for example a grocery basket, spring planting basket and Easter items.  Items may be dropped off at the Health Centre or given to any Health Auxiliary member. As always, new members are always welcome and will be accepted at any time, she said.

Regarding Legion activities, Laura Dahl said that the last Friday of the month continues to be the potluck supper get-together. The supper on January 29 was very well attended, she said, adding that anyone interested in providing music for future suppers may contact Donna Lulashnyk.

The Legion Family Curling Bonspiel will be held March 5 and 6, she said.  Games are usually six ends, with one draw on March 5 and two draws on March 6. Following the last draw on Sunday, there will be a potluck supper and a prize event. This bonspiel is a great chance for young curlers to get some practice and have some family fun, she said, encouraging persons interested in participating to contact Larry Dahl.

The Legion will be donating bingo cards to the Pelly Happy Hearts Club as the cards are no longer being used in Norquay, Dahl said. “The Legion continues to actively seek interested persons to join as it would be a sad day if Branch No. 351 were to close. The Legion hands out close to $2,000 a year to students in Norquay, Pelly and Sturgis to help in furthering their education.  All money raised by the Legion goes back into the communities.”

Speaking about the Tail Twisters 4-H Club, Ruth Demetrick said that a general meeting was held February 2 at the Norquay School Library, where members discussed ordering hoodies or T-shirts for the club. Members also discussed participating in the 4-H provincial ski day to be held on March 5 at Mission Ridge in the Qu’Appelle Valley.

Some members expressed interest in attending the Western College of Veterinary Medicine Equine Club annual Equine Education Day for young riders (six to18 years), including Pony Club and 4-H members, at the Veterinary College at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon on March 5. 

Details for the Trade Show supper on March 18 were also discussed.  The menu will be lasagna, Caesar salad, garlic toast and dessert. Details were to be finalized at the meeting on March 1.

A new date was chosen for the club’s public speaking event, Demetrick said. The club will now hold its public speaking competition on March 20 and the club will be hosting the District 18/19 Public Speaking Event on April 3.

Maggie Lukey said that the Playschool parents will be providing desserts and sandwiches at the Trade Show on March 18 for the afternoon coffee.

Discussing figure skating, Melissa Czornobay said that lessons continue on Wednesdays and Fridays and that the kitchen is open during practices, with a variety of menu items available. Members held a carnival on February 28 and the Skate Canada Figure Skating Lotto draw will be held at the end of April.

Reagan Foster said that the junior and senior bands participated at the Parkland Music Festival in Canora on February 11.

Nicole Korpusik said that the Norquay Nighthawks hockey team held a tournament on February 20 for both the men’s and women’s teams and the team may be attending a tournament in Estevan in April.

Regarding the Active Aging Group, Delphine Howard said that classes are continuing to be held Mondays and Wednesdays, with about 14 members taking part at each class. Breathing exercises have been incorporated into each session, she said, adding that the group has purchased new exercise bands with some of the grant money received.

Application was made for a Community Spaces Grant for upgrades to the ball diamonds, Nicole Korpusik said.
