Preeceville ski family does well at Alberta cross-country race

First big cross-country ski race nets big rewards for local family of skiers from Preeceville.

PREECEVILLE – Members of the Nordic Ski Club from Preeceville attended and did well in their first big cross-country  race meet of the season.

The Maier family children of Nathan and Megan Maier of Preeceville all medalled in each of their age category in the cross-country Alberta Cup held in Edmonton on Jan. 27 and 28.

Isaiah Maier placed third for the U20 category for both days of racing (Saturday was classic 10 km and Sunday was freestyle/skate 7.5 km); Hudson Maier won a silver medal in the 2009, U16 category both days (Saturday 7.5 classic and Sunday 5km freestyle), and Levi Maier won first place in the 2011 boys in U14 category both days (Saturday classic 5km and Sunday 5km freestyle).

Charis (U10) and Evelyn (U8) each raced one km and got first in their year of birth categories but they awarded chocolate medals to all participants. There were 31 Saskatchewan athletes there and the announcers said there were 400 people in all the race categories registered over the two days of the Alberta Cup races in Edmonton. train

“The kids have been working hard dedicating their time to training in and around our family farm with the encouragement of their coach who is also dad, Nathan Maier,” said Megan Maier, mom. “The highlight of the weekend was that we got to meet cross-country Olympic silver medalist Sara Renner who we had purchased a set of skis from a few months prior. We are excited to know that a pair of skis she used for training are now being used by our son, Hudson."
