While Saskatoon’s long-serving greenhouse is being decommissioned, city officials promise the flowerbeds and pots around the city will be vibrant with colour again this growing season.

SASKATOON – The City of Saskatoon is turning to the private sector to supply seasonal plants for the flower pots, flowerbeds and indoor greenery dispersed throughout the city.

The city’s greenhouse facility, located within the Vic Rempel yards off Avenue P North, and built in 1958, has reached the end of its service life, according to a city press release.

In recent years, the greenhouse has experienced escalating structural concerns due to its age and design and will soon need to be vacated for the safety of staff, the city says. In September 2022, an engineering assessment indicated increasing problems with the greenhouse structure from the previous year and recommended it be vacated.

The city’s beautification efforts will continue, however. While options will be explored for the future of the greenhouse, the city has secured a contractor to provide plants for the 2023 season.

Later this year, city administration will bring a report back to city council outlining longer-term recommendations for the future of the greenhouse program.
