Outlook and area residents may have noticed one of the RCMP vehicles currently being used is equipped with an Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR). The ALPR equipped police vehicle is on loan from the Rosetown Integrated Traffic Unit and has multiple reader/heads which use infrared light beams to scan license plates. The heads automatically read license plates, and compare them with a database of stolen vehicles, disqualified drivers, and unregistered motor vehicles. The automated functionality of the ALPR is much quicker than having members physically entering plates into the system and waiting for a return. The ALPR alerts members within seconds of locating a vehicle of interest to police. The Outlook RCMP have been using the vehicle for a week now, and advise the ALPR has lead to several offenses being identified by the members while operating the ALPR equipped vehicle. The Outlook RCMP plan to use this ALPR vehicle at times throughout the year when available.
