At the most recent regular Rocanville town council, the council discussed potentially using the Gas Tax Fund money for a project to loop a water line under Highway 8. They would need to dig up Highway 8 to get to the line for the project and then repave it.
The Ministry of Highways is set to repave the highway next year and the council is unsure if it’s worth looping the line and repaving in the near future if the highway will once again be repaved in a year.
As a result they plan on contacting the Ministry of Highways to see if they can dig up the highway and complete the loop and rather than repave it themselves they would time it so it’s repaved when Ministry of Highways comes in.
“If we dig up the highway—it’s right outside the RM building basically is where the line stops—and we want to go further east so we can create an alternative water source,” said Administrator Monica Pethick. “There’s two stop ends at the moment and there’s no join right through. The east end of town is supplied by another line. When we had a water break last year, it meant the east end of town was without water.
“By closing this loop and connecting the two stop ends, it means we have two sources of water to supply that end of town. Also, by us not having two stop ends it means we’ll get less turbidity in the lines because there’s a continuous flow, the dirt and grime doesn’t collect where it stops.
“Our blacktop guy comes in sometime in August,” Pethick said. “If the work isn’t done, the Ministry of Highways won’t let us leave that road unpaved over the winter. If we dig it up, it has to be repaved. I have to contact the Ministry of Highways to see if we can dig it up in one session next year when they’re actually paving it and that would save us some money.”
Fire services agreement with Tantallon
The council gave their second and third reading to a bylaw that will provide Rocanville’s fire services to the Village of Tantallon.
With Tantallon being on the border of Rocanville and Spy Hill’s fire coverage areas, they have the ability to ask the province to allow for a preferred 9-1-1 response area and have requested that be Rocanville.
“Our fire department approved it,” said Administrator Monica Pethick. “The RM and Tantallon did their third reading as well, so that’s gone through.
“Basically Tantallon approached the province to select Rocanville as their preferred service provider. This will begin on September 15 so every time someone in Tantallon hits 9-1-1 and asks for a fire service it will automatically click to Rocanville and not Spy Hill.
“At the moment, until September 15—it takes six weeks to get it through—they will have to state that they require Rocanville’s fire services,” said Pethick. “Once it’s September 15 it will default to Rocanville.”
Fire department ROXOR
The council passed a motion to purchase a Mahindra ROXOR for the Rocanville Fire Department. The ROXOR will cost $24,169.93, plus taxes.
“Basically we’re purchasing a ROXOR for the fire department,” said Administrator Monica Pethick. “It’s a normal split, the fire department will pay their share and the town and RM will pay their share.”
