Update: Saskatoon Police charge woman in fire on Kingsmere Blvd

On Dec. 4, police responded to the 800 block of Kingsmere Boulevard for a report of a multi-unit residential structure fire.

Update: The Saskatoon Police Service General Investigations Section has arrested a 40-year-old woman in connection to a structure fire of a multi-unit residential structure on Dec. 4.

Janis Kittiekaywinnie has been charged with arson with disregard for human life and makes her first appearance in Saskatoon Provincial Court Wednesday.

SASKATOON - Police are investigating a structure fire that may have been deliberate. 

On Dec. 4, at around 5 a.m., police responded to the 800 block of Kingsmere Boulevard for a report of a multi-unit residential structure fire. Members of the Saskatoon Fire Department arrived on scene and put out the fire without incident.

Police say their preliminary investigation by officers on scene led to arson and forensic identification investigators being called in to assist. 

The investigation is ongoing. Saskatoon Police say that a criminal determination of the cause has not yet been identified and no charges have been laid.

An investigator from the Saskatoon Fire Department determined it was arson saying the suite hallway was deliberately set on fire, trapping a man inside the bedroom. He managed to escape the fire through the bedroom window.

Three fire engines, one ladder truck, a rescue unit and the Battalion Chief were dispatched to the scene. The first arriving crews reported flames coming from a window of a ground-floor suite.

A fire crew started helping evacuate other occupants of the building while incoming firefighters.
