Several appointments made during newly-elected council meeting

The newly-elected councillors of the Town of Canora made several appointments while meeting with the mayor for the first post-election town council meeting which was held on November 1.

            The newly-elected councillors of the Town of Canora made several appointments while meeting with the mayor for the first post-election town council meeting which was held on November 1.

            Deputy mayors were selected to hold the position for three months each from November of this year until April of 2018. The deputy mayors and their terms are: Sheldon Derkatch, November to January 2017; Brad Gabora, February to April 2017; Brent Pelechaty, May to July 2017; Eric Sweeney, August to October 2017; James Trofimenkoff, November 2017 to January 2018; and Kerry Trask, February to April 2018.

            Councillors were also appointed to various standing committees featuring a chairperson and one member. The committees are: general government, which is led by Derkatch with Trofimenkoff as a member; protective services, which is led by Trofimenkoff with Trask as a member; public works, which is led by Sweeney with Gabora as a member; environment and health, which is led by Gabora with Pelechaty as a member; recreation and culture, which is led by Pelechaty with Derkatch as a member; and planning and development, which is led by Trask with Sweeney as a member.

            Some boards and organizations require councillors to hold a position for a term, and some positions will only be held until December 31 of next year. Derkatch will handle the Parkland Regional Library Board and the Canora Welcome Statue Committee as well as the tourism committee with Trofimenkoff as an alternate. Trask was appointed to the Canora Agricultural Society with Gabora as an alternate, the Canora and District Fire Protection Board with James Trofimenkoff, the east central tourism region with Mayor Gina Rakochy as an alternate, and the community planning commission and community economic development commission with Sweeney. Trofimenkoff will be on the Canora Rural Public Utility Board as a non-voting representative with Sweeney as an alternate.

            Gabora was appointed to the staff occupational health and safety committee with Trofimenkoff as an alternate as well as to the Canora and District Health Care Foundation with Pelechaty as an alternate. Pelechaty will run the leisure services board with Gabora as an alternate, Canora Community Child Care Centre Inc. with Derkatch as an alternate, the Whitesand River Advisory Council, the Good Spirit Provincial Park Advisory Group with Sweeney as an alternate and the Canora Composite School Community Council with Trask as an alternate. Rakochy was appointed to the Parkland College President’s Advisory Council.

            Serving perpetual terms were Rakochy, Derkatch and Trofimenkoff for the emergency measures organization committee; Rakochy for the Canora and District Community Benevolent Fund Administrative Committee Inc. with Trofimenkoff as an alternate, Sweeney for the District 19 Joint Committee, Trofimenkoff for the Upper Assiniboine River Basin Study Committee, Trofimenkoff and Sweeney for the north east area transportation planning committee, and Derkatch for the Canora Special Transportation Association with Gabora as an alternate.

            After positions were appointed, the council arranged for the mayor and councillors to attend the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) east central meeting in Yorkton today (November 16).

            Development permits were received from Kris Heshka, Doug O’Dell and Eric and Erin Saunders. Building permits were received from Chad Nordin, Earl Goretzky and Kris Heshka.
