As the school year is quickly coming to a close, teachers and staff at Canora Composite School made time to congratulate those students who excelled in their academics and extracurricular activities through the CCS awards program.
In the Grade 12 academic proficiency awards, first was awarded to Megan Tomilin, while second and third went to Philomina Mykytyshyn and Scott Popoff. The award for the Most Improved Student went to Mickayala O’Connor.
Class specific awards went to Megan Tomilin (Biology 30, Art 30 and English 30B), Mina Mykytyshyn (Physics 30, Pre-Calculus 30, Calculus 30, History 30 and English 30A), Scott Popoff (Chemistry 30 and Physical Education 30), Abby Gulka (Foundations of Math 30), Cheryl McPhee (Workplace and Apprenticeship 30), Tristan Morozoff (Construction 30), Ryan Edwards (CAD 30), and Tyler Taylor (Computer 30).
The Governor General’s Award was also presented at the awards ceremony. This prestigious award was given to 2015 graduate Jordan Lazaroff by board member Shannon Leson.
The first-place Grade 11 Academic Proficiency Award was presented to Carmen Stusek. Abby Gulka won second, while Cheryl McPhee won third. The Most Improved Student Award went to Ryan Edwards. Grade 11 and 12 awards were presented by Ronda O’Dell and Llewellyn Thomas Lowes, with Level 30 class awards presented by Helen Forbes, Kim Eitenier, Calvin Tomilin, Cecil Machnee, and Dustin Nielsen.
The Grade 10 academic proficiency awards featured Abbey Sakal with first place, Amber Weinbender with second place, and Nathan Bucsis with third place. The Most Improved Student was Bryce Pelechaty. Grade 10 awards were presented by Calvin Tomilin.
The Grade 9 awards were presented by Colin Knight and Helen Forbes, and first place went to Felicity Mydonick. Second went to Carley Ostafie, and third, to Rebecca Hort. The Most Improved Student Award went to Jensen Gabora.
The Grade 8 academic proficiency awards included first place, presented to Emma Mykytyshyn. Other awards included the second-place award, won by Ashley Stusek, the third-place award, won by Jordelle Lewchuk, and the Most Improved Student Award, won by Chase Hudye. The Grade 8 awards were presented by V. Robin Kapitoler and Andrew Hoffman.
The first place of the Grade 7 academic proficiency awards went to Maxwell Mydonick. Second place went to Emily Owchar, while third place, as well as the Most Improved Student Award, went to Larissa Makowsky. The awards were presented by Alexandria Blatter and Cindy Sznerch.
The first place Grade 6 Academic Profieciency Award was granted to Abigail Wilson. Second place went to Clay Sleeva, and third went to Isabella Mykytyshyn, while the Most Improved Student was Codee Kopelchuk. Awards were presented by Jennifer Sleeva and Karen Wilgosh.
Grade 5A awards went to Logan Lewchuck and Zoe Thomas, while the Most Improved Student Award was granted to Havin Berehula. Grade 5B awards went to Jackson Krontenko and Meadow Ostafie, with the most improved being Jaxon Bisschop. The Grade 5 awards were presented by Leona Kitchen and Koren Pitkethly.
Extra-curricular and athletic awards were also presented to deserving students. Most dedicated awards were given for peewee cross-country to Dawson Zuravloff; peewee drama, Drea Beblow; peewee volleyball, Bella Mykytyshyn and Lane Zuravloff; peewee basketball to Drea Beblow and Brendon Landstad, peewee NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program), to Cole Fountain; peewee golf, Clay Sleeva; peewee badminton, Bella Mykytyshyn and Hudson Bailey. The junior track-and-field award went to Rebecca Hort, junior golf, Clay Sleeva; junior badminton, Felicity Mydonick; junior NASP, Alden Baron; junior drama, Emma Mykytyshyn; and junior curling, Brandon Zuraloff.
Peewee football, junior girls’ volleyball, junior girls’ basketball, junior boys’ basketball, and junior football each featured three awards. In peewee football, the Rookie of the Year Award went to Hayden Parmley, the Spirit Award went to Grady Wolkowski, and the MVP (Most Valuable Player Award went to Alden Baron.
For junior girls’ volleyball, the Rookie of the Year was Sarah Belanger, and the Spirit and MVP awards went to Mackenzie Gulka and Jill Gulka. In junior girls’ basketball, the Rookie of the Year Award was presented to Sydney Unick, the Spirit Award to Felicity Mydonick, and the MVP Award to Mackenzie Gulka. In junior boys’ basketball, the Rookie of the Year was Alden Brown and the MVP was Derek Barteski, while Brayden Ostafie received the Spirit award. In junior football, the Rookie of the Year Award went to Nicki Bayda, the Spirit Award went to Brett Popoff, and the MVP Award went to Derek Barteski. Junior Athletes of the Year were Felicity Mydonick and Derek Barteski.
Grades 5 and 6 give out two leadership awards, and this year, the recipients were Mya Wolos and Clay Sleeva. Their awards were presented by Leona Kitchen. The Spirit of Youth awards, presented by Helen Forbes, were given to Derek Bartesky and Felicity Mydonick for the junior category, and Ben Kuang and Megan Tomilin for the senior category.
Three Black Box Players awards were also presented for drama to Abby Wilson (peewee), Kami Kuhn (junior) and Brittany Hamilton (senior).
Senior extra-curricular activity awards were also presented. The most dedicated awards went to Abby Gulka for cross-country; Graeme Wilgosh for drama (performer); Scott Popoff for drama (technical); Ben Kuang for drama (spirit) as well as track-and-field; Bryce Pelechaty for golf; Dale Weinbender for badminton; Bailey Steciuk for NASP; Grace Medvid for curling; and Megan Tomilin for SRC.
In senior girls’ volleyball, the Rookie of the Year was Amber Weinbender and the MVP was Mina Mykytyshyn, while Carmen Stusek received the Spirit Award. In senior girls’ basketball, the Rookie of the Year Award went to Abbey Sakal, the Spirit Award to Mina Mykytyshyn and the MVP Award to Bailey Steciuk.
For senior boys’ basketball, Nathan Bucsis received the Rookie of the Year Award, Ben Kuang received the Spirit Award, and Kyle Strelioff received the MVP Award.
In senior football, the Rookie of the Year Award went to Bryson Hannotte, the Spirit Award went to Scott Popoff, and the MVP Award went to Tyler Taylor. The senior athletes of the year were Philomina Mykytyshyn and Scott Popoff.
The awards ceremony was held on June 9 and presented awards to students from Grades 5 to 12. The awards were sponsored by local companies including Richardson’s Pioneer Ltd., Canora Photography and Framing, CIBC, R.C.F.M. Consulting Ltd., Merriam Prairie Projects, Royal Canadian Legion, Canora Home Hardware, 20Twenty Wealth Management, Homestead Glass and Lock, Leson’s Funeral Home, Lisa’s Cutting Room, Ludba Construction, Canora Pharmacy, C.O. Towing and Recovery, and Gateway Co-op.
