Sunrise Health Region earns accreditation

Accreditation Canada has advised Sunrise Health Region that the region is accredited under the Qmentum accreditation program.

Sunrise Health Region achieved or exceeded national standards on over 95 per cent of the 1,900 key service elements reviewed by the survey team.

Accreditation Canada is a non-profit independent association which, based on standards of excellence, provides national and international health care organizations with an external peer review process to assess and improve services.

In November, Sunrise Health Region programs and facilities underwent documentation review and an on-site survey by a team of Accreditation Canada surveyors. To be accredited, the health region must demonstrate advancement in the 1,954 applicable key service elements associated with the eight quality dimensions of population focus, accessibility, safety, work life, client-centred services, continuity of services, appropriateness, and efficiency. The region was also required to demonstrate compliance with 33 required organizational practices predetermined by Accreditation Canada to be evidence-based patient safety practices applicable to all health care organizations.

“Each time that we go through an accreditation process we learn from the experience,” said Suann Laurent, president and chief executive officer of Sunrise Health Region. “The fact that our team was able to achieve 95.8 per cent of our criteria and 96.6 per cent of high priority criteria on initial assessment makes me incredibly proud, and proves that we are continuously improving the quality of our health services.”

Preparing to achieve accreditation is an ongoing commitment by Sunrise Health Region managers, physicians, and staff members, she said. Between survey years, quality improvement teams continuously monitor and guide improvements to safety and quality, and the board receives regular progress reports on the teams’ activities.
