Suspicious sudden death investigation results in second degree murder charges

On April 18, 2020, at 6:00 a.m., Fond du Lac RCMP received a report of an altercation between several people at a residence in the community of Fond du Lac.

When RCMP officers arrived at the residence they located an injured 18-year-old male and an injured 19-year-old female. Both were transported by RCMP officers to the Fond du Lac Denesuline Health Centre for treatment where the male was later pronounced deceased. The female was treated at the Health Centre and has since been released.

Fond du Lac RCMP officers quickly identified a 19-year-old male suspect. Investigators located the suspect at a second residence in Fond du Lac where he had fled after the altercation. The suspect was arrested without incident at 7:31 a.m. on April 18, 2020.

Jacob John Pacquette (DOB: 2000-06-24), a 19-year-old male resident of Fond du Lac, has been charged with 2nd degree murder and aggravated assault. He has been remanded and will appear in La Ronge Provincial Court (via telephone from Fond du Lac) on Monday, April 20, 2020 at 9:30 a.m.

The deceased has been identified as Skylar Smith, an 18-year-old resident of Fond du Lac. Skylar Smith also used the name Skyler Fern.

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit – North and the Prince Albert RCMP Forensics Identification Section were deployed to Fond du Lac to assist with the suspicious sudden death investigation. The investigation is continuing and an autopsy will be conducted on Monday, April 20, 2020 in Saskatoon.
