SWF regional report given at Preeceville branch’s horn measuring day

Heath Dreger, the Region 3 director of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, gave a detailed report on December 13 at the annual meeting and horn measuring day for the Preeceville branch of the SWF.

Heath Dreger, the Region 3 director of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, gave a detailed report on December 13 at the annual meeting and horn measuring day for the Preeceville branch of the SWF.

He announced that the 2016 SWF annual convention is coming up February 18-20 in Yorkton. The SWF looks forward to hosting the convention and hopes that area branches will send delegates.

The SWF has taken over administration of the provincial fish hatchery located in Fort Qu'Appelle, Dreger said. “We are looking at upgrading the facility in the near future and an engineering study is in progress. Currently, the SWF is looking at a few options to acquire funding for this large project.”

The SWF, Ducks Unlimited and Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) are in the process of assessing over 160,000 acres of Fish and Wildlife Development Fund lands across the province, he said. Approximately 80 per cent of these lands have already been assessed in 2015. After land assessments have been completed, the SWF, DU, and NCC will develop management plans for these lands. The SWF will be responsible for the management of a large portion of these lands, about 100,000 acres. Each parcel will be managed according to what is best suited to preserve, maintain, and enhance habitat for wildlife, said Dreger.
