Wily coyote visits

YORKTON - A coyote is occasionally wandering into the city-owned trailer court adjacent to the cemetery.

“One had moved in,” said Yorkton Mayor Mitch Hippsley, adding it is thought it wandered in off Logan Green.

The City did receive a couple of calls about the four-legged visitor, and staff was sent to the trailer park, but the wily coyote had apparently moved on again.

“By the time they got there it was gone,” said Hippsley.

Hippsley said the sighting is not something to be too concerned about, noting living in a city surrounded by areas like Logan Green means there will occasionally be skunks, racoons, foxes and coyotes seen in the city.

This year sightings on the city’s south side might actually be up because it is theorized with the dry conditions animals have migrated to the trout pond area for water, said Hippsley, adding that is thought to be why bear scat was found in the area earlier this year – a bear was wanting a drink.

Generally, if wild animals are left undisturbed they aren’t a significant danger. If one does become a problem, then it becomes an issue for the City.

Hippsley said at present the City doesn’t have staff with wild animal control expertise, or the use of a firearm should it come to that, so they would need to hire outside people to deal with a wild animal were it to become a problem.
