In terms of sports few times of the year are more intriguing than February when it comes to having keeping me watching the sports news feeds. Baseball is headed to spring training, with pitchers and catchers reporting soon.

The Regina Pat Canadians were in Yorkton on Feb. 13 to take on the Rawtec Maulers. The contest between the two SMAAAHL teams was the second in the week, as they had met Monday in Regina, where the Maulers lost with a score of 6-2.

The Ken Newall rink of Norquay topped the annual Arran Mixed Open Bonspiel held January 20 to 27.

The regional playdowns for under-18 curling was hosted at the Yorkton Curling Club Sunday. On the girls side a team out of the Saltcoats Curling Club advanced to provincials which will be held in Regina.

Another successful fundraising wheelchair bonspiel was held at the Broda Sportsplex in Kamsack.

Hockey fans from Canora and the surrounding area took advantage of the opportunity to watch hockey from five different age groups, including two novice games, during Canora Minor Hockey Day on January 26.

The Calgary Roughnecks ended their own streak of misery and kept the Saskatchewan Rush’s going on Saturday night.

The Yorkton Terriers continue to scuffle in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action, losing two on the weekend, and being only 3-7 over their last 10 games.

A rising star in the game of lacrosse, a game which has been described as the “fastest growing sport in North America” was in the Kamsack area recently.

A team made up of Zuravloff family members won the A event of the Canora Town and Country Bonspiel held at the Sylvia Fedoruk Center from January 23 to 27, which seemed fitting, since the event is known for a strong focus on family participation.
